Recently included in DownBeat Magazine's "25 for the Future" a list spotlighting the next generation of jazz talent, and named one of the 10 Emerging Jazz Artists of 2023 by the Recording Academy, Lu’s unique sound continues to captivate audiences worldwide. Her latest collaboration with bassist Richie Goods, Connected, just won "Best Instrumental Album" at the 34th Golden Melody Awards.

This project spent 20 weeks in the JazzWeek Top 20, earned "Best Jazz Song" at the Golden Indie Music Awards, received three Golden Melody and four Golden Indie Music Award nominations, and led to Lu being celebrated as a "vibraphone rising star" in DownBeat Magazine’s 69th Annual Critics Poll. Her band has performed at prestigious festivals, including the Clifford Brown Jazz Festival and DC Jazz Festival, and toured extensively across Europe, Asia, and the United States.

When she was playing classical percussion, Lu collaborated with composer Ching-Mei Lin, performing her marimba concerto Pulsing Wave for six-mallet marimba, gave a solo percussion concert at Taipei Novel Hall, and was recognized as an "Emerging Young Artist" in 2014 for her work with her marimba duo.

In 2017, Lu attended the Banff Jazz Residency under the direction of jazz pianist Vijay Iyer, where she met jazz trumpeter Jeremy Pelt. This experience marked the beginning of her journey as a regular performer in the U.S. and later led to her joining the esteemed Jeremy Pelt Quintet. Her sophomore solo project, Built In System, released in Fall 2023, has been praised as one of the best jazz and world albums of 2023 by The Times of London.

The Path (2020)

by Chien Chien Lu

Classically trained in contemporary percussion is her native Taiwan, Chien Chien Lu, the emergent vibraphonist best known, to date, for recording and touring with Jeremy Pelt Quintet, is excited to release The Path, her genre melding debut as a leader.
Accompanying Chien Chien are an elite cast of musicians, a group sourced principally from Pelt's ensemble-with the blessing of the maestro. Such a strong blessing, in fact, that Pelt himself appears here on his young protege's debut, alongside bandmates Richie Goods on acoustic and electric bass, Allan Mednard on drums, and Ismel Wignall on congas/percussion.
Goods, in addition to producing the album and arranging its two most recognizable standards, introduced Chien Chien to guitarist Quintin Zoto and pianist Shedrick Mitchell, both of whom prove indispensable here. Though this is not the first time Chien Chien and Mitchell have played together-both played on Goods' most recent release, My Left Hand Man, a tribute to Goods' mentor, the late pianist Mulgrew Miller. And so here we have yet another example of jazz's circle of life: musicians paying mentorship forward.

Built In System (2023)

by Chien Chien Lu

I would like to dedicate this album to all the people and things that have inspired me. As a woman from Taiwan, I view the world with my eyes and heart, seeking direction and peace. In the process of searching, I use the most familiar tool from my childhood, "music," to compose the sounds that exist in my imagination. I am happy and grateful for the significant individuals who have appeared in my life.

More About Richie Goods and Chien Chien “CONNECTED“

Our music has always been about connecting people, bridging different cultures, races, or whatever divides us. I firmly believe that music is the universal language, offering a perfect means of connecting cultures, even though we come from diverse musical backgrounds.

We believe that music is the crystallization of cultures. When listening to music, what resonates with us the most is the feeling, a sense of time. The sense of time in music is intricately connected to the emotional impact it has on the listener. To truly understand this sense of time, you need to know and immerse yourself in the culture. We find that aspect truly special.

Also, the development of music often traces an economic route. Jazz, for instance, found its origins in Louisiana where it accompanied business activities, becoming an essential part of the local culture. Similarly, Taiwan's traditional Nanguan music (南管音樂) has its roots in Quanzhou and followed an economic route along the shoreline. We find this historical connection fascinating. This is also why jazz migrated to New York, as it became the new financial hub..."

Jazz is essentially American classical music. Just like with any kind of music, if it remains stagnant, if it stays in one period or one era, eventually it will die out. Finding ways to progress the music is crucial. I believe that finding ways to advance the music, often through collaborations between musicians from different backgrounds, can be very beneficial.

I hope that people who see this can gain a better understanding of how we are all connected, how we are all the same. Even though our music is not that far apart, we can still connect on so many levels as human beings.

CONNECTED (2022)

by Richie Goods & Chien Chien Lu

"CONNECTED" was formed during the lockdown. Bassist Richie Goods and vibraphonist Chien Chien Lu had frequent conversations about the Black Lives Matter movement and unwarranted hate crimes against Asians. They decided to undertake a project that would unify people and evoke imagery of love and peace. Not only was the music they produced impressive, but their friendship also deepened as they explored the stereotypical discord that often exists between the African American and Asian communities. Richie Goods and Chien Chien met in 2019 during a European tour. Shortly after, Richie produced Chien Chien's debut album, "The Path." As their collaboration continued to flourish, a new endeavor emerged: "Connected," a project that embodied the profound musical connection between them.

Chien Chien’s foundation in classical training provided a rich and textured canvas upon which their collaborative work thrived. Her intricate knowledge of classical nuances intertwined seamlessly with Richie Goods' background rooted in the realms of R&B and Funk, creating an enchanting juxtaposition of genres that breathed life into their compositions.
